I don't currently have many lanterns in my collection. If you wish to see more lanterns, please visit my Links page.
List of lanterns I currently have:
THORN ALPHA 1 (Complete) For Photographs, click here.
90W SOX ? volts
(Mark 15)
Removed 26th March 2002 from column no. 24199 (Derby) due to faulty control gear.
New gear and lamp fitted 26th June 2002. Now works perfectly.
THORN BETA 2 (Bowl) (awaiting photograph)
55W SOX ? volts
Found in field on 28th February 2000. Beta 2's nearby, but all with bowls.
Damage to front end (i.e. - no toggle mechanism clip) and crack in underside.
If I had the rest of the Beta 2, this would be OK, but would have to be taped to lamp compartment due to above damage.
THORN BETA 5 Side Entry deep bowl (Complete) (awaiting photograph)
35W SOX ? volts
Given to me personally by some extremely kind and friendly workers of Tarmac's Streetlighting division on Saturday 7th September 2002 who were painting columns and checking fuses on my estate when I spent over two hours talking to them and asking questions. It was removed, along with others that had already been scrapped, from a street with concrete columns that were being replaced with new metal columns. The only work I needed to carry out was to add a longer cable, as the lantern had its own control gear.
The men returned the following week, (Sat 14th Sept 2002) to replace a twisted metal column and they asked me if the lantern was working! Again, I spent another two hours helping/hindering them with their work, the best part being when I held the bracket from the old column before it was fastened to the new one. It's not easy holding a video camera, bracket and lantern at the same time!
PHILIPS SGS 204 Side/ Post Top Entry flat glass (complete) (awaiting photograph)
400W SON-T ?volts
This was meant to be the Alpha 3 I mention at the bottom of this page. Instead I got this lantern. In Derby, UK 2002 a major scheme is underway called 'Connecting Derby'. It involves reshaping and modernising of routes. Many Alpha 3's were in places work was to be carried out, along with a few SGS 204's where Alpha 3's had been removed three or four years ago. On hearing a lantern had been removed on Thursday 26th September 2002, I went down to the workmen's lockup (with permission!) and asked the workmen there about this lantern. I was then shown into a cabin and the SGS 204 was on the floor. Picking this lantern up proved to be quite a task! I can safely say, this is the heaviest lantern in my collection!
It doesn't work yet, as I have not been able to gain access to the electrical parts of the lantern as they are fastened together with a very strange hexagonal screw. I say 'strange' as it didn't fit any of my keys designed for these special screws. I should hopefully be able to gain access next week. It's hard to tell if it has control gear or not, as there are TWO sets of wires coming leaving the lantern.
If anyone can help me with this, please email me.
This year, I am due to be receiving a Thorn Alpha 3 - more details to follow as soon as I know more.
