Gamma Six lantern no longer being made! (15/9/02)
Shock! Horror! I checked out the Thorn website today and discovered that their infamous Gamma 6 lantern is no longer being made! It is to be replaced by a new similar lantern, the Gamma Basique, which gives a better lamp choice, as well as different bowls/tops, and also now a completely vandal-proof version. Looks like I may have to add this to my 'wish list' of lanterns now!
Check out the catalogue this lantern is on by clicking here.
Why I like Street lighting so much (x/x/02)
I have always been interested in different types of lighting, especially street lighting as there was a GEC Z5698U lantern followed by a Thorn Gamma 6 lantern outside my bedroom window. I knew nothing about photocells or that the lamp inside was a 35W SOX lamp. Whenever there was a problem with it, I was always the one that reported the problem. I was once there when it was being repaired - it was really interesting! The only thing I can't remember was if they repairmen ever collapsed the column or left it up and fixed it with a ladder. (The column was the collapsible one designed and patented by Abacus). It has only been since about 2000 when I moved house that I actually started looking up information on Street lighting. I found out lantern names in 2001, and in 2002 technical information, lamp types and when/if a particular lantern has been replaced or not.
